Welcome
CCDA Presentation Night
Central Coast Dressage Association held its annual presentation night at the Gosford Golf Club on Friday 5 February 2010. The event attended by over 50 people saw a variety of club members and their supporters celebrating 2009 performances and the 30th birthday of CCDA.
One of the great things about the night was the variety of ages from the young (11 years old) to the not so young (two octagenarians) all celebrating the successes of 2009. It was also good to see that the awards were presented to the young and not so young and every one in between. Brianna Cartwright (11 years old) and Judy Amory (octagenarian) both received performance awards demonstrating that dressage is for everyone.
Whilst some were not available to receive their prizes in person others made a big effort to come with one "dragging" their father out of hospital so that he could see what all the early mornings were about. The happy winners received a variety of prizes including embroidered rugs, saddle clothes, trophies, medalllions, and certificates from Jerry Shepard, one of the clubs original members. Jerry no longer rides but still has a keen interest in the club even after 30 years of being a member.
This year two encouragement awards were given to Sue Barrett and Bonnie Denness. These two lucky riders each receive a voucher for a lesson given by an instructor at one of the clinics organised by CCDA.
One award that is always great to see given out is "Volunteer of the Year". This years surprised winner was Bill Barrett. Bill was very excited to receive the award which was a handcrafted leather belt made by Jason Philips from Wyong Saddlery. Further details of the award can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.
A special presentation was given to Wendy Paxton for service to CCDA over number of years. Like Bill Wendy was also surprised at receiving an award.
The feature of the night, other than the awards, was a presentation by Dr Paul McGreevy, Associate Professor. Paul's speciality is animal training and welfare, teaching, researching and consulting at the University of Sydney's faculty of Veterinary Science.
Paul's talk focused on science based equestrian sports discussing a number of scientific research findings as well as the need for increased consideration of horse welfare for the future of sport. The talk was entertaining and thought provoking including a discussion on rollkur, a topic that is occupying many administrators and members in equestrian sports around the world.
Three lucky people each received an autographed book of Paul's as a lucky door prize.
The night was a great success so don't forget to make space in your diary for next year's event.
